I have learned something about yard sale early birds that I thought I would share. Like many of you, I once thought the reason early birds got to a yard sale early was because they were greedy and wanted to get the best stuff first. I now know this is not true for all early birds. For some, but not all.
Let me explain. Generally, the most common yard sale starting times (at least here in my town) are 7:00 and 8:00 a.m. Let's say Garage Sale A starts at 7 and Garage Sale B starts at 8 but they are both in the same neighborhood or same vicinity. If I finish at Garage Sale A at 7:15, naturally the next stop on my list is Garage Sale B. Especially now with gas prices being so high, I don't want to have to drive all the way back across town to go to the same area I was at an hour before. This wastes time and money.
This is how I handle being an early bird. If I get to a garage sale early and there are already lots of people there, I say nothing except maybe "good morning" to the person/persons having the sale. However, if I get to one early and I am the only one there, I will ask them if it is ok for me to go ahead and look even though it is before the starting time. It is just something courteous I like to do. It is a rare occasion that I am the first early bird though!
Isn't it funny how we sometimes become what we once loathed?
